Diocesan Update March 1st, 2017

149th Convention

Spring is nearly here, and that means it's time to gear up for Convention! The 149th Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany will be held Friday, June 9th through Sunday, June 11th at Camp of the Woods in Speculator. Our theme this year is Shine!, based on Matthew 5:16. There will be exciting speakers and engaging workshops. So get your registration in early and save your spot! You can register here.

Cathedral of All Saints

Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys
The Cathedral Choir of Men & Boys will be performing their spring concert on Tuesday, March 14th at 7:00 p.m. at The Cathedral of All Saints, 62 S. Swan St., Albany, NY 12210. The choir will be performing Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass (Mass for Troubled Times). They will be joined by members of the Arcadia Players and guest soloists, with all being directed by Woodrow Bynum, Director of Music. Oaks of Righteousness

Volunteer Opportunity
Oaks of Righteousness Ministry is seeking volunteers to help with painting, sanding and other minor construction tasks as they prepare for their upcoming chapel dedication. Worship Opportunities

Morning Prayer, Benediction, Healing Service
There will be a service of Morning Prayer with Benediction on Thursday, March 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann's, 37 Division St, Amsterdam, NY 12010. This will be a combination of quiet meditation and prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and Morning Prayer, concluding with Benediction. A Healing Eucharist will be celebrated at St. Ann's on ​Saturday, ​March 4th at 4:00 p.m. (Note corrected time!) This service will begin with contemporary praise and worship music and Eucharist will be celebrated. The preacher will be Mtr. Christina Hunter. Prayer will be offered for those in need of healing or any other needs and reconciliation (confession) will also be celebrated. All are welcome at either or both of these services.

Healing Service
Christ Church, 70 Mansion St, Coxsackie, NY 12051, will be hosting a healing service on Wednesday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m. The service is intended to be Spirit-led and generally includes music, a short talk and prayer. Everyone is welcome. Come and bring a hurting friend.

Training Opportunity

Alzheimer's Workshop for Faith Leaders
Keeping Faith in Mind, a workshop for leaders of faith communities, will be held on Tuesday, March 7th from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at The Conkling Center, 79 Warren Street, Glens Falls, NY 12801. This program is designed to provide basic information that everyone needs to know about memory loss issues and what they mean for all of us, as well as practical tips for creating dementia-friendly communities of faith. Chaplains, clergy, pastoral care coordinators, parish nurses, and care givers should attend this informative workshop. The program is free, but registration is required as space is limited. Chains Be Broken Conference
The conference Chains Be Broken: Understanding the Effects of Pornography and Working Towards a Solution will be held on Saturday, April 22nd from 8:15 a.m until 5:00 p.m. in Glens Falls, NY. Speakers will be Dr. William Struthers, Professor of Psychology at Wheaton College and author; Jessica Harris, blogger and author; and Audrey Assad, author, speaker, producer, and critically lauded songwriter and musician. Mission Opportunity

Episcopal Volunteers in Mission
The Episcopal Church is re-launching the Episcopal Volunteers in Mission program. In this program, lay or ordained adult Episcopalians (ages 30+) devote six to 12 months volunteering in an area of the Anglican Communion. Healing Center at CtK

Healing Service Preacher - Rev. Matt Baker
The Guest Preacher for the Service of Healing at Christ the King Spiritual Life Center on Tuesday, March 7th will be the Rev. Matt Baker, Rector of St. Luke's, Cambridge. You can read his full bio here. The Healing service includes inspirational music and praise, powerful testimonies about the healing power of Jesus Christ, and phenomenal teaching and preaching. At the end of the service, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is available as well as personal ministry with a prayer team. Individual Prayer Sessions are also offered by appointment for those who would like to receive more intensive prayer ministry. The service begins at 10 a.m. in the Oratory Chapel. A buffet lunch is available for purchase ($11 including tax) in the dining room of the Welcome Center beginning at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome.

Day of Quiet and Healing
The Healing Center at Christ the King will host a Day of Quiet and Healing on Saturday, March 11th from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. For more information, click here.

Messy Fiesta
St. Andrew's Church, 10 N Main Ave, Albany, NY 12203 is hosting a Messy Fiesta, a Celebration and Training Day, on Saturday, March 11th from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The day will be led by Julie Hintz, Regional Messy Church Coordinator. She will cover topics such as reaching your community, engaging all ages, creating welcoming spaces, building relationships, encountering God together, and having fun. Learning Opportunity

Faith-Based First Responders
On Saturday, March 25th from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., St. James' Church 305 Main Street, Oneonta, NY 13820, will host Faith Based First Responders: Spiritual Caregiving to Help Addicted Persons and Their Families. This workshop is designed to equip Senior Pastors, church leadership, and lay ministers with some of the tools necessary to address one of the most difficult crises that our community faces: addiction. The workshop will take an honest, science-based, spiritually sensitive walk through the issues that churches face when it comes to addiction. The workshop will cover recognizing addiction (the first step in spiritual caregiving), pastoral/spiritual care of addicted persons and families, self-understanding and understanding prevention strategies, and the role of community in the recovery from addiction. A New Day
Cursillo is a method for enriching and deepening Christian lives through prayer, study and action. Cursillo begins with a weekend held at Christ the King Spiritual Life Center and continues with the support of fellow Christians for the rest of the participants' lives. Cursillo is being renewed in the Diocese! A women's weekend is being planned for this fall and a men's weekend for the spring of 2018. A Diocesan Cursillo Reunion will be held at Church of the Messiah 296 Glen Street, Glens Falls, NY 12801 on Saturday April 29th from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Fellowship is from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. with coffee and music. The program lasts from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and will begin with Eucharist with Bishop Love celebrating. Please bring your own lunch. You do not need to have been on a Cursillo weekend to attend the reunion; everyone is welcome. Twelve-Step Opportunities

St. James', Lake George
St. James' Church, 172 Ottawa St, Lake George, NY 12845 will host SA meetings on Saturdays at 7:00 p.m.. SA is a 12-step program for people with sexual addiction. The meetings will be in the parish hall. For more information, call the church at (518) 668-2001.

St. Paul's, Kinderhook
St. Paul's Church, 6 Silvester Street, Kinderhook, NY, Kinderhook, NY 12106 will host a 12-step Eucharist on Saturday Febrary 25th at at 5:30 p.m. in Saint Benedict's chapel in the McNary Center. The 12 Steps are a healthy spirituality for anyone — you need not identify as alcoholic, addict, or codependent, attend a twelve-step group, or follow the steps in order to benefit from the Eucharist. Come and bring a family member, friend, neighbor, or acquaintance. Anonymity is respected. Individual prayer for the healing of any affliction is available at the Eucharist or by appointment. St. Luke's on the Hill
St. Luke's Church, 40 McBride Rd, Mechanicville, NY 12118 hosts the following 12-step meetings weekly:
Nar-Anon, Thursdays at 7:00 p.m.
AA and Al-Anon, Fridays at 7:30 p.m.
NA, Saturdays at 7:00 p.m.
Additionally, there is a 12 Step Eucharist at 4:00 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, with a potluck supper following. For more information, call (518) 664-4834.
