Bishop's Message - Hurricane Harvey [and Irma] Relief

August 31, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For the last several days, Hurricane Harvey has unleashed untold devastation on Southeast Texas with category 4 force winds reaching speeds of up to 132 mph and torrential rains measuring as much as 51.9 inches in some areas, and with much rain over Louisiana. Hurricane Harvey has dumped an estimated 19 trillion gallons of water over Southeast Texas and another 5.5 trillion gallons over Louisiana. Such numbers seem incomprehensible. Countless homes, farms, businesses, schools, hospitals, and government buildings have either been blown down, washed away, or severely flooded, resulting in hundreds of billions of dollars (if not more) of destruction. Thousands of people have lost everything they own. Tragically, several lives have been lost as well.

Several of you in the Diocese of Albany have expressed a desire to help, but with such devastation and loss, it is hard to know where to begin, or how to help. There will be opportunities in the days and weeks and months to come for cleanup crews and work teams to go down and provide onsite assistance. You may sign up as a possible volunteer on the Ready to Serve database here. Right now, in the immediate aftermath of the storm, however, we can be of greatest assistance through our prayers and financial assistance.

I invite and encourage each of our parishes and brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the Diocese of Albany to hold all the Hurricane Harvey storm victims and their families up in your daily and weekly prayers. I would also ask each of us to give as generously as we can financially in support of the relief efforts. You may give to the Diocese online here or send a check made out to the Diocese of Albany with an annotation in the memo section "Hurricane Harvey Relief" to Hurricane Harvey Relief, Episcopal Diocese of Albany, 580 Burton Rd. Greenwich, NY 12834 and it will be passed on to the appropriate diocesan relief agencies in the Diocese of Texas, the Diocese of West Texas, and/or the Diocese of Louisiana as the needs are made known. You may also give to Episcopal Relief and Development here.

You may read (or watch) Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's response to the devastation here for further information on other ways you or your parish may be able to help with the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. May God bless you and use you mightily as a channel of His love and mercy and grace as you reach out to our brothers and sisters in Texas and Louisiana.

Your Brother in Christ,

+Bill

Ninth Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Albany
