Ongoing Mission in Peru

Diocesan Missionary Update from Lima, Peru. February, 2011.

The Diocese of Peru is growing. We Mudges are helping Bishop Godfrey implement a more coherent ordination process in Peru, planning commission on ministry interviews, and giving ordination exams. There are a lot of people in the ordination process. We are also involved in a variety of seminary activities, from teaching a wide range of classes, to mentoring students, to keeping academic records and overseeing student progress.

It has been said that Saints Augustine seminary is the largest Anglican seminary in South America. We have been working with the Rector Saints Augustine seminary to break new ground in Anglican/Episcopal on-line education. We are designing course materials in Spanish that are Internet accessible, and the seminary has just begun putting whole courses on-line. Over the next few years, more and more of the curriculum will become available on-line in order to benefit students in Peru and across South America, students such as Dimas.

Dimas lives in Lima and has been attending Saints Augustine seminary. Like most seminary students, he has a full time day job and takes courses at seminary at night. Starting in February 2011, the on-line aspects of his seminary training can make education accessible to him wherever he may be, as long as he has access to the Internet, either at an Internet cafe, a terminal at the seminary, or elsewhere.

Like the Diocese of Albany, the Diocese of Peru has links with dioceses across the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. As of February 2011, on-line education is making Saints Augustine seminary available to students across the Western Hemisphere who would not otherwise have access to seminary level courses in Spanish. That is quite a few potential bishops, priests, deacons, and lay ministers on both continents, particularly in South America. You are part of that effort.

God bless you.

In Christ,

Fr. Shaw, Mtr. Julie, and Lydia Mudge
