We think it was a tie!!!! The day truly was a blessing. We all had fun and enjoyed are self and can not wait till tomorrow.
Sewing team Tuesday and Wednesday:
On Tuesday morning, the sewing group consisting of Mitzi, Kathy, Wanda, Jane, and Bernice instructed 20 women in San Pedros de Marcois in embroidery work on pillow cases which were donated by Bridgewater Nursing Home in Binghamton, with designs of animals and geometrics printed on them by Sharon Hafele of Christ Church, Deposit. A joyous day was had by all and the women will return in the morning for another day of community and sewing.
Medical team Tuesday and Wednesday:
In the morning of the first workday, members of the medical team met with nursing administrators from MUSA Hospital and received a tour of the facility. Members of the medical team included: Laura Kasey, MS, RN, CEN; Sue Seibold-Simpson, PhD, RN; Yvonne Johnston, MS, FNP; and Sandy Hitchcock. Members of the MUSA nursing administration included the Director of Nursing, the Associate Director of Nursing, and Director of Nursing Education as well as a Peace Corps worker from Japan. MUSA Hospital covers a ten-county region around San Pedro DeMarcosis with one clinic alone seeing more than 400 patients per day.
We visited nearly all areas of the hospital--internal medicine, pediatrics, maternity, orthopedics, emergency, psychiatric, and dialysis as well as radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy. Laura spoke with administrators about opportunities for an exchange experience for MUSA nurses. Laura also delivered medical supplies that were donated by Lourdes Hospital, Wilson Medical Center, AO Fox Hospital, and others.
They thanked us and were all very gracious to us. Sandy was our van driver and documented the visit with pictures even scrubbing up to go into the nursery! In the afternoon, we had a wonderful prenatal class with 18 expectant or new mothers.
The nursing team of Laura Terriquez-Kasey and Sue Seibold-Simpson and Joyce began the day at Conucos. We provided a pediatric screening clinic for the children of the community, which ran from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm. Approximately 50 children from 10 days old to 16 years old were examined and their families were counseled. The most common concern was “el grippe,” a respiratory condition including a runny nose and cough that is often secondary to respiratory irritants such as burning garbage. Most of the children appeared to have parasite infections from drinking contaminated water. A few children had more serious conditions such as heart murmurs, jaundice, or more severe respiratory infections and were referred to the medical clinic. After the pediatric screening clinic, the nursing team returned to Buen Pastor Clinic where we observed the physician providing medical care in the local clinic. Again, respiratory infections and parasite infections were seen. Many medications can be provided directly to the patients at the clinic.
Vacation Bible School team tuesday and wednesday:
Wendy, Dora, Kathy, Bernice, Wanda, and Jane worked with 20 children in Buen Pastor. It was very rainy so many children who had signed up could not attend. The lesson was the story of Jesus. Sister Priscilla helped us and they sang us a song about the shepherds coming to see Jesus at his birth.
On Wednesday, the word had spread in the village so Bernice, Wanda, Kathy, Dora, and Wendy had 42 children in attendance. A teenage girl, Emily, from the village read the story called, “A Special Night,” which told of Jesus’ birth. They enjoyed three projects to accompany the story.
Construction team in Buen Pastor tuesday and wednesday:
The project on Tuesday was to paint the children’s chapel on the second story of the church. Kathy, Dora, and Wendy were “supervised” by Bill.
In the afternoon, Bill and Mitzi painted a hallway.
On Wednesday, Wendy and Dora painted a small room in the bell tower. In the afternoon, Bill and Mitzi painted an office.
Construction team in Santa Fe tuesday and wednesday:
David and Michael worked on bathrooms both days. Sandy, Jenn, and Anna painted benches on Tuesday and on Wednesday they painted the bathroom and walls.
Sandy and Charlie drove us all around. Pray for the Drivers.”
